Raising £60,000 in memory of Sophie Emily Mitchell
Summer Hockey for Sophie should, with your help, raise £60,000 or more for Little Hearts Matter, in memory of Sophie.
Progress towards our target
raised of £60,000 target
Why?
To raise funds for Little Hearts Matter, the only UK charity dedicated to supporting those affected by a single ventricle heart (half a heart). In 2015 Sarah and Andrew Mitchell’s first child, Sophie, was diagnosed with this condition. Sophie survived seven surgical procedures, but at 5.55pm on Sunday 25th October she had a fatal cardiac arrest and lost her battle.
Andrew did a short interview on Original 106fm news, which gives an audible overview of why we are doing this. You can read a more in-depth story about Sophie’s life here.
When?
Saturday 23rd May 2026. 10am to 5pm.
Who?
Teams participating:
- The Edinburgh Drifters Summer Hockey Club
- Kinross Hockey Club
- Forging Strength Kinross
- The Edinburgh Academical Hockey Club
- The Watsonians Hockey Club former members
- Sophie's Wanderers (a love-in with our friends-of-old from Erskine Stewart Melville, Aberdeen Grammar and Madras).
How? Fundraising
Sarah and Andrew are working towards raising £60,000 in memory of Sophie. £25,000 of this was raised in 2015 for the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow and Crossbasket House. Another £23,000 has been raised so far in a year of fundraising which started on 14th September 2025, when Sophie would have been ten years old.
We hope that Summer Hockey for Sophie will result in the £60,000 target being met. Each hockey team has an individual JustGiving page that links in a tournament team fundraiser. The hockey team that secures the most donations will win a special prize, to be revealed on 23rd May at the tournament.
